You're absolutely right.

The reports of the expenses meeting (http://tinyurl.com/cx8jso) with Brown, Nick and Cameron seem to typify this belief in both a "Divine Right" to be Prime Minister and a downright tendency towards autocratic lunacy.

Then again, that is a Daily Mail report ;-)

This also seems different to the situation in 1997 - the Tories had completely lost the media, but I got the impression of Major as an embattled leader who just couldn't lead his own party no matter what he tried.

Brown seems to be different - an autocrat who nobody will stand up to and just tell him what he's doing wrong. I also get a sense of entitlement from him, he's entitled to be Prime Minister, it was promised to him, and by god he's going to be PM how he likes, and those pesky opposition politicians shouldn't question him (its almost like he believes in the Divine Right of Prime Ministers)
